Abstract

Business cycles play a significant role in shaping the strategic decisions of firms, particularly in the area of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Economic conditions such as expansion, slowdown, recession, and recovery influence the willingness of companies to invest, acquire competitors, and expand into new markets. In India, recent years have witnessed a considerable rise in M&A activities across sectors including banking, technology, healthcare, telecommunications, infrastructure, and renewable energy. These transactions have been influenced by changing macroeconomic conditions, government policy reforms, digital transformation, and post-pandemic economic recovery. This study examines how different phases of the business cycle affect merger and acquisition decisions in India. It explores the relationship between economic growth, market confidence, availability of finance, and corporate restructuring. The paper also reviews recent M&A trends and highlights the opportunities and challenges faced by Indian companies during varying economic conditions. Secondary data from published reports, journals, company disclosures, and government sources have been used to understand the evolving pattern of M&A activity.
